Do crushed Egg shells really work against slugs? Or am I better off sticking to slug pellets - or even the egg shells plus a few pellets...

I once bought a huge tub of crushed egg shells from netto for a couple of quid and found it worked a treat. But i have never seen them since. The year before last we saved all out egg shells in a big tub in the lottie but the soon started to stink, so i soaked em in ***** fluid until last spring, then i drained em off and sort of crushed em, but it was not as effective so i went back to the sharp stick and flame weeder to kill em.
I wish i could buy crushed eggshells locally as i would use them again if the cost was not too high.

What I do (when I can be bothered) is give the egg shells a quick wash then put them to one side until I'm using the oven. I then stick them in the bottom of the oven for 10min or so to dry out - no smell issues. You can then crush them or whizz them in a food processor. Don't know if they work with slugs though, I plan on using them for brassicas.Comment

I used them for slugs, to no effect.
I cultivated a nice warm compost heap then instead, and now have armies of slow worms who do a much better job.Comment

I found the same as Taff. They do not deter slugs. The idea is that the rough surface puts them off so even if it did work it would be pointless in combination with slug pellets.Comment

much better just to invest in some slug nematodes when the soil warms up a bit.Comment
