  • direct sown carrots

On sunday I sowed a 2ft square area with autumn king. Since then we've had rain every day and even some hail. Will this hinder or even kill off the seeds?

I also planted a lot of onion sets, will they be ok?

There's been no frost, just wind and rain (and hail).

The seeds should be ok, although I haven't sown mine yet and won't do so until May.

The onion sets are resilient too, mine have been snowed on ( a bit) and green shoots are appearing now.

i sowed mine around 3 weeks ago, they took two weeks to come up - and in those two weeks we had rain - so i would also say they should be fine.

We've had a few frosts, but the carrots are coming through OK. They've taken about 3 weeks.

Several weeks ago I sowed a couple of rows. One I popped bubble wrap over and have checked on everytime I go to the lottie....nothing
The other row, I totally forgot I'd sown until yesterday, a perfect little line of 2cm growth between my onions.

You can pick up carrot seeds so cheaply so it's not going to cost you a fortune if you get it wrong. x

I'm about the same distance: we had hail yesterday too, but up the road 3 miles stayed dry

could be too cold, or the slugs could have grazed them off overnight

The unpampered row are up...they are between my onions that are mulched with ash, perhaps the slugs don't like it.

Thanks all. I'll keep an eye on them. Sun has come out now, warm the ground up a bit.

I've only just noticed my baby carrots coming up beneath fleece. Remind of stubble, don't ask me why...
