    Hi new to gardening i have a bit of lawn that i will be using for a veg patch it has been covered with black plastic sheeting the grass has gone brown will this be ok to turn over and leave for the winter to break up the soil and rot the grass down cheers in advance

      should be fine - just watch out for any nasties like bindweed/couch-grass roots, and fork them out separately if you spot them (they can be dried and added to the compost heap once dead).

      After digging/rotovating, it would be ideal to sow some sort of green manure, which would be turned in in the Spring. This helps stop the goodness in the soil being washed away with the winter rain and improves the soil structure.

        I would be more inclined to spread some manure over the area and then recover, let the worms start digging it for you
