  • cut and come again

Hello, I was wondering if someone could tell me where I cut a 'cut and come again' plant? I'm growing mixed salad leaves and I'm supposed to 'cut and come again' but it doesn't say where or how early in the plants life i start harvesting. thanks!!

As lettuces grow new leaves from the inside, what you are cutting are the larger outer leaves which will be replaced by new growth.

Depends what sort of salad leaves you are growing I suppose but if they are "proper" lettuce types, just cut them above the base of the stalk and the whole lettuce will regrow.
If they are salad leaf plants like rocket, mizuna, pak choi and red russian kale (this is the mix I use) then just snip them off with scissors when they are about 4" tall and they will resprout and grow again fairly quickly.

Welcome to the Vine Helanuels and try not to worry.

You can cut your cut and come again salad anywhere you like and any size you like.

As for size - cut them as you need them - anything is edible - but for best returns maybe let them get about 3 - 4 " tall.

Cut them near the ground - they will grow back.

If you think you are running out sprinkle a few more seeds. They will keep coming all summer.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

          Thanks peeps!

I'm very excited. I had a little nibble of rocket yesterday because I got too curious to wait.

When i grow my lettuces do I need to keep them in my mini green house or will they cope outside in pots? I have no garden you see.

          Thanks again x
