Can you guys tell me the difference between a cultivar and a hybrid? I get confused and its always asked on my nvqnthat Im doing. When I ask at work its never explained in easy terms?

I believe that a cultivar is propagated from a cutting, so all the plants have originated from a single plant that had the desired characteristics and plants grown from seed are unlikely to grow true to form.
A hybrid is created by crossing two different varieties of plant.
If thats not quite right I'm sure a wiser grape will be along at some point to correct me

Cultivar comes from “cultivated variety” and it means that a human being worked on the plant to improve it through selective reproduction by seed selection, plant cuttings, mixing varieties and other human led processes. (Not by genetic meddling though).They keep talking about species, variety, cultivar and hybrids and I don't know what they mean!Sometimes two genetically different plants interbreed and may have descendants. If their descendants can reproduce by themselves they are called hybrids, regardless if they had human interaction or occurred in nature.Comment

A hybrid can be a cross between two species or a species & a hybrid to try & produce a seed/plant with better disease & pest resistance,higher yields,better colour,any improvement on the original plants characteristics. If the cross produces stable repeatable forms & if the plant can maintain it's characteristics through propagation then it's a cultivar.Location : EssexComment

My two penneth! A hybrid is a cross between two or more cultivars. A cultivar is just a sub species/type/variety of a particular genus ie cabbage,onion,ryegrass etc
