That looks good to me. Is it a lunchbox type? I guess you just judge by eye. After harvesting a few you'll get the hang of whether you took them too early. Thing is you can pick them at different stages, they will just get bigger if you leave them. But leave them too long and they'll get over-ripe and fall off. It should be more or less rounded like in your photo and firm.

As a general rule, if not sure of the variety, pick at 6 to 8 inches long. There should be small seeds inside.

You can leave them to grow but the skins can get tougher and seeds can become very large and get in the way of eating.

Some varieties are designed to grow longer fruit though so if you find longer is ok then leave them longer!!!

      What variety did you sow?
The proof of the growing is in the eating.
      Leave Rotten Fruit.
      Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potasium - potash.
      Autant de têtes, autant d'avis!!!!!
Il n'est si méchant pot qui ne trouve son couvercle.

Looking at the picture I'm guessing that is Marketmore,if it is I would say 6" in length gives the optimum size to sweetness ratio
He who smiles in the face of adversity, has already decided who to blame

Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity
