  • Could someone cast an eye over my seed list

Been plotting which seeds I am going to buy but as a new grower wondered if someone could cast an eye over the ones I am looking to buy before I splash out in case I have choosen some dodgy varieties or if anyone can recommend any replacements that I may be better off with.

    French Bean - Purple Teepee
    Beetroot - Globeetroit 6:Rubidus
    Cabbage (winter) Savoy January King
Cabbage (Spring, Summer, Autumn) Pyramid F1 Hybrid (sounds like a racing car?)
    Carrot (short crop) Nantes Frubund
    Carrot (main) Resistafly F1 Hybrid
Carrot (fast crop) Nantes Frubund again
Leek - Autumn Giant 2 Argenta
Lettuce - Lollo Rossa (only lettuce I actually like)
    Parsnip - White Gem
    Swede - Brora
    Turnip - Snowball
    Potatoe (early) Rocket
    Potatoe (2nd early) Anya
    Potatoe (main crop) Cara.

    Thanks

They all look good to me Nicola. Good luck.

I would also choose to have Purple Top Milan turnips over Snowball. In addition, my choice would be for a monogerm beetroot such as Solo, but mostly cos I hate thinning them.

for beetroot, I would highly recommend Cylindra ... mine grew faster, bigger and straighter than Boltardy (the old classic). Didn't bolt either.

Are you sure? I would be happy to send some money to cover the cost of them and postage.

Positive - I got the packet free in a gardening mag and I don't like turnips. It's only a first class stamp to post them on and as I'm finding on this forum, what goes around comes around.

I've grown Rocket spuds for the past couple of years- but they're not esp tasty.
I'll not be growing them next year- not decided what variety I'll go for as yet.
I always grow Charlotte- small salad spuds at the beginning of the season and if the blight is a bit later in the year, they can stay in the ground until big enough to make chips. Nice waxy spud.

I'd go for charlotte too. Rocket are fast but not worth the eating really. The point of growing your own is that they taste good! I also love Arran Pilot.

Will look for another early variety then.
Been and bought my seeds, they didn't have any pyramid cabbage.
I got Chioggia Pink beetroot, it came free when I bought 2 packets of any seeds so I actually have 3 packets of the beetroot (it was that or corn salad)

I am starting off with just 3 beds and have planned what space I will allow each veg and there is no more room for anymore veg. I have put myself on 2 allotment waiting lists but they are years long so no more seeds for me this year (unless I decide to build 6 beds before March arrives)
