  • constantly repotting

I've got some spinach and various mixed salad leaves on the go at the moment... they're doing really well, the only problem is they seem to outgrow their pots very quickly

I've read various threads on here that say you should move up one size at a time... maybe I've taken this too literally, I repotted from 4" to 5" inch pots last weekend and they need repotting again already... Homebase pots move up in 1" increments so this could be time consuming and costly!

    What's realistic?

If it's cut and come again you're growing for, stick them in a big pot to start with.
If it's individual fully grown plants you're after, pot on gradually, but you can go a couple of inches at a time if you like.
Actually, just thought, everything could have gone in a big pot to start with for cut and come again, but the trick is to have a big/wide pot, not an incredibly deep one. A trough type pot would be fine.

Thanks taff, yeh definitely cut and come again

I wish I'd known that before, would have saved me alot of time... I've got some salad seedlings in the propogator now, when I come to prick them out should they just go straight in a big pot with everything else?

Salad doesn't need to be in a propagator, just sow it outdoors at this time of year.

Propagators are useful when it's cold, but you don't need them in July

btw, lettuce is a cool weather crop and it won't germinate in high temps
