  • Composting...

    Hi all

I inherited one of these with my new allotment plot...

Any advice on what I need to do to ensure good compost? And how long will it take to make?

I don't understand how I'm going to be able to turn the compost for starters. So is there some kind of special recipe I need to try and stick to?

    Hmm...

Easiest way to turn compost over when using a 'dalek' is to rock the 'dalek' to loosen it from the compost, lift it off, re-position it & then refill with the compost putting it back in from the top of the pile downwards.

This might be contentious, but I use my dalek to keep the stuff I don't want (marestail and couch grass roots). The stuff I want to compost goes in a triple compost system made with scaffolding boards.

Think I might follow suit... I thought these were some kind of miracle bin that composted in a reduced time. Didn't realise I was going to have to go through the same process as a normal compost heap! Pah!

Rats seem to make a good job of turning over the stuff in meh dalek. Reluctant to use poison, don't want to poison foxes and owls and those bak back traps look as if they'd take a finger off!
