    Christmas Veg

    Okay first of all I appologise for using the C word. As most of you know I'm a complete novice when it comes to growing anything. What I was wondering is what veg could I grow for Christmas. I have already sorted out potatoes.

    Could I grow carrots and parsnips? How about iceberg lettuce or any lettuce really. Everything has to be grown in containers and pots. They can be put in the greenhouse. If I can grow these when would I need to start.

    I know its early to be asking but I'm trying to get my head round everything.

    The following could all be grown in pots for Christmas time - Leeks, Swede Carrots (maincrop type) will be okay as will parsnips in deeper pots.
    For lettuce, try a winter variety - Marvel of Four Seasons or similar in your greenhouse.
    Both Spinach and Chard will crop throughout the winter months as well.
    Also Spring onion (Winetr Hardy White Lisbon ) would be okay.
    There are others such as savoy cabbage or winter cabbages which might be okay in pots.

            I once dug a foot deep pit, shoved a pane of glass over it, then sowed Winter Salad Bowl in late summer ( might have been Winter Little Gem) inside it, and left it. Didn't need to water, and it kept producing cut and come again all winter.
            Not having a greenhouse, and often not able to get there for watering, I have to be inventive ! This year I am thinking of buckets, partly dug in, maybe with a bit of manure around them to help keep the warmth up, and plants with bottle cloches.
            I found that although many plants are supposedly not winter hardy, the likes of some cabbages for example, the frosted outer leaves turn to mush and the inner ones are perfectly okay.
            There's no point reading history if you don't use the lessons it teaches.
