  • Chard gone to seed

Some of my chard has gone to seed, (along with 2 turnips) Assuming its ok to use can I cook it like spinach leaves? Umm now thinking this should be in the cooking bit

Oh yeah and will it taste ok do ya reckon?

just watch them and if they have a funnier turn than normal then the answer was no

I think the flavour changes slightly but is fine to eat

I'm deliberately leaving mine to seed as my chooks ate every tiny scrap of my new plants and I need more seeds ...sigh! Normally I just pinch out the flower stems and keep eating.

I've got one massive (4ft high!) chard left from last year which is definitely going to seed. Lots of seed! I'm still using the leaves both for the chooks and for curries for us. Tastes fine. My idea is to let the plant set some seeds and then sow them. It might not turn into the world's best tasting chard but the chickens aren't picky - and they get through lots of greens!

We are also letting one chard go to seed and saving the seeds...mine is alongside celeriac which is also going to seed; and lots of leeks [also going to seed] and I've got plenty of beetroots in the canal garden just flowering now...I've already collected mizuna and spring onion seeds this year. Just trying a germination test on the mizuna before I pack it all up. YAY
