  • Buying a water butt question

I have been looking at water butts and like the look of this sort of thing:

Mini Rainsaver 100 litre Water Butt Kit HomePage
Compact Rain Saver Kit 100L - Water Butts & Accessories - Garden Watering -Gardens - Wickes

As you have probably noticed, the photos are exactly the same, except one of them has the label on! So I'm wondering if they are the same product. And if they are, why is one £10 cheaper than the other?

I'd appreciate it if anyone knows, also if anyone has any recommendations for something similar.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I can see quite a difference, the cheaper Wickes one has a 10 year guarantee whilst the more expensive one only has a 5 year guarantee.

Most probably the same product but the buying power of Wickes makes the difference.

      London prices are always higher....

edit - and they only deliver to mainland UK and exclude the Scottish Highlands too...

Thanks both! Potty, I did notice the longer guarantee with Wickes, if it is the same product and cheaper then I'll go for that one.

Mothhawk, I'm sorry but I didn't quite understand your post - we have Wickes here too, don't think it is more expensive than elsewhere - and we're not in the Scottish Highlands so I don't know why that's relevant

Argos also sells the same thing but no mention of a guarantee :-

I have one and its well made and robust.. had it about 5 years now.
If you have the space get the bigger one.

Thanks Bren - I saw the Argos one but thought it was a different type to the others, plus the lack of guarantee put me off. I think I will go for the Wickes one. Arpoet, we don't have space for the larger model, but thanks for the tip

100 l isn't a great deal of water if you are going to be growing in containers. If you can find a bigger square one it would be better.

Thanks Roitelet, but the space where it is going to go is pretty small, we can only fit the compact one in. We might still need to use some tap water, but saving 100 litres is a good start

And if we find it really is too small, we could get another.

Do I need to add any sort of chemical to the water, or can I just use it as is?

The water butts I was talking about are tall thin and stand close to the wall and take up much less space than a round one and hold about 200 ltrs.

You dont need to add anything to the water but do clean the butt out once a year to get rid of the sediment.

I use one this size on my GH seems to work well in the small space I've got for it.

Your first link is to the London borough of Barking and Dagenham 'get composting' site. Wickes on the other hand is a nationwide company with standardised prices.

As for relevance, you can't rely on that from a member of the Nutters Club

(and I didn't know your location when I answered)

Thanks for the replies, I can't find a tall thin 200 litre one in our budget, so will stick to the 100 litre
