  • Black beauty courgette

    Hello all...

    Need a little advice.
I have some black beauty courgette seeds and for some strange reason I have the idea that they should be planted and grown in the greenhouse but all of my books say they should grow outside.

They are already on ,y plan to go in the greenhouse, so I am wondering which is best? And if they can go in the greenhouse then when can I sow them?
My greenhouse is just one of those cheap double PVC ones.

    Many thanks in advance

Courgettes are tender plants so you need to avoid frost at all costs.

I start mine in 3 inch pots around the end of April / beginning of May in the heated propagator on the kitchen windowsill. As soon as they have germinated they get moved to the windowsill itself and then to the unheated greenhouse as long as there's no frost forecast.

They are hardened off by putting them outside during warm days for a couple of weeks, and then planted on the allotment in June after the frosts have finished (hopefully).

Vix you're not that far from me and I sow my courgettes the just the same way as Rustylady does. They do spread out a fair bit so they would soon takeover your greenhouse so they are best of outside.

I've had an early courgette in the poly tunnel in the past but they get HUGE and the fruits seem to double in size every five minutes. I decided not to do it last year as they tend to overtake the entire bed but might this year if the weather is looking iffy and then throw it before the toms / aubergines etc get to full size by which time the outdoor ones should have caught up.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
