    Bean query

    Right, this is a bit long and I am outing myself as a newbie with my query.

    My beans don't seem to be doing well at all. I planted them out end of May and we have had no frosts since (Aberdeen).

    They are still only about 15cms tall (marginally more than what they were when I put them out onto the lottie). I was thinking, maybe my soil had been contaminated by some bad manure, however, the beans I have at home in a pot, with different compost and no manure have also stopped growing.

    Am I doing something wrong here?
    I'd love some beans. Aren't they meant to be easy to grow?

    There's a couple of possibilities, firstly they may be a bit shocked if they went out without being hardened off and it takes a while for them to get going again but also what variety are they and have you checked they're not a dwarf variety? If so then they won't grow much - if this is the case you won't be the first person to have fallen for this, most people I know who grow have at some point provided full height support to dwarf things and not enough support to full height plants

    Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

    Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

      Not much help I'm afraid, more sympathy

      This is my third year of trying to grow beans on my allotment and they are always stunted and yellow although I did get a few beans off them last year.

      this year I was determined to do better so I dug a deep hole, lined it with newspaper filled it with the contents of a grow bag and kitchen waste, mixed with chicken pellets and watered well before planting my beans (Scarlet Emperor, Cobra and Isabel). They appear to be going stunted and yellow again. As you know, we've barely had more than a day without rain the past few weeks so I don't think it's lack of watering. I haven't used horse or cow manure so it can't be contamination, I think I may just have poor soil.

          mine are about a month old and are just sending out the climber so hold on they shhould start and were due a warm weekend to kickstart them. the weather has been ok but not blistering pace growing weather.

            Well I'm going to sow mine this weekend!

            There may not have been much frost, but it's been b cold, wet and dull.

            My broad beans are flowering nicely, though. Aren't bean flowers pretty?
