  • Bagged manure from wyevales

I have just been to Wyevales (thanks to all who highlighted the reduced seeds - treated myself!!) to get my multipurpose compost and they also had bags of well rotted manure 4 80L bags for £10. They looked like they might be ideal for mixing with the soil on my raised bed. However, I am nervous about doing it in case it is affected by the herbeside that a lot of you warned about last year. My OH says it is highly unlikely for a commercial supplier to use infected manure but has anyone else seen this on offer in Wyevales or asked about it in there. No good me doing it, they were all kids and I couldn't turn a bag over to see what was on the back as the stack was too tall. Also, beware - they have their bags of seed potatoes in and the bins were all reversed to what was on the signage!! Anyway, any advice appreciated.

Glad to have spotted this one.

Off to Wyvale in the morning to see if the seed potatoes were in yet-obviously they are

I used a mixture of the manure, soil improver and compost for my raised beds last year with no problems at all. Whether there is any chance of them being affected I can't say.

They do seem to have good deals, always top up on every visit.

Levingtons bagged manure was said to be affected by aminopyralid last year, I used a bag of it on my new raspberry bed and out of 9 canes I only have 3 still alive and not very healthy I can't speak for the Wyevales, but I'd ring up their head office and ask if it's provenance has been checked. The herbicide has now been banned from use, but last years manure could still have been affected. It's only a good deal if it's safe!

I'm always a little suspicious of Clearance and Reduced items. After all, you will only reduce the price of something if you can't sell it at full price?

Thanks all for your replies. T.S. I don't think it was a quick reduction for a quick sale, I got the mpression that it was their normal price for bulk ie 3 x multicompost for £10 but you may be right.
Sarzwix, that's what I was wondering as I knew that it was now withdrawn but obviously some places will still have stock. Mind you if Dandamegs used it last year with no ill effects it's likely that it's safe innit!!!? I think I'll do as suggested and ring the head office and ask for provenance and assurance that it does not contain Aminopyralid. I have such a small growing area that it would be devastating to lose any space. Will keep you posted if I get a sensible reply.
Dandamegs, they did have the bagged seed potatoes, and a good selection of first and second earlies for 2.5k @ £3.99 but they told me they will be having loose seed spuds next week for £2.99 if that helps. Sanjo

As far as I know, it is their normal price. It has been the same every time I go there.

Thanks Sanjo, they do have a good selection.

I was after 1st earlies, and they had the ones I wanted. Swift, Rocket, and Pentland Javelin

I managed to persuade myself it was too early though, and left empty handed.

Wilko's was disappointing, all they had were seeds, nothing else at all. Grabbed some Chilli's and Cuc's so not a totally wasted trip out

They've got to clear the crimbo decs so that they can clear the space for Easter eggs.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Easter Eggs are up already in our branch.
Plenty of seeds too, but no spuds or onion sets yet.
