  • Am I too late to plant Potatoes?

    Hi

I have some 'Swift' and 'Charlotte' seed potatoes that I bought on a whim about 6 weeks ago but I have only just cleared some space to be able to plant them, is it too late now?

    Thanks

As they are 1st earlies, I would get them in. They should be ready in 8-10 weeks.

Seeing as you already have the potatoes it would be a shame not to plant them out.

I agree with the others. It is late, but they'll grow just fine and it would be a shame to waste them.

I only grow 1st earlies these days and plant from end Feb to Beginning of August every 2 weeks. You'll be fine and get a nice tasty crop.
At this time of year do make sure they don't dry out.

I've just bunged 8 Sarpo Mira into a bed in the greenhouse. No idea if they will like the greenhouse but the idea is to have potatoes for Christmas. I planted Sarpo Axona last year outside in bags at the end of July and they did provide me with a few new potatoes at Christmas. I had to be quite creative with bubble wrap to keep the frost off them and they spent the last 2 months in my garage which is nearly dark so it can't have been ideal. Hoping for better this time.

Seems like a good idea so get a steady stream of fresh potatoes.

I have some potatoes in but I have no idea what they are or when to pull them up
I usually wait until they die off, but I'd like to pull them up a bit earlier as I think
                that might help prevent disease.

What a good idea, think I might try that next year.

I dug up lots of nice tatties today, Vivaldi (from Supermarket) ....what would happen if I re-planted some of them straight away?

They won't start to grow for at least a couple of months, probably not until spring.
