Cool name. Your Dad was one of the best musicians to have ever lived by the way.

My name is simply paying homage to one of my heroes.....homer simpson.whilst the recent simpsons movie wasn't the best, the bits with the pet pig are priceless. For those who haven't seen it........the following is sung to the theme tune of the cartoon spiderman....
"spiderpig,spiderpig,does whatever a spiderpig can,
can he spin,from a web?
No he can't, he's a pig!"

Cool thread Wellie, only just found it though!

Protea is a genus of flower found predominantly in South Africa. My Avatar is the King Protea which is my favorite of all the Proteas and is the national flower of South Africa. It is pronounced Pro-tee-a (lots of people mis-pronounce it pro-tea)

The reason i chose it is not becaue i'm South African, but because i worked out there for a while in the wilds of the Northern Province on a game and cattle farm working for a horseback safari/riding holiday business. I totally fell in love with South Africa and would love to live there. I even had Protea's in my bouquet and table flowers when i got married 18 months ago!

I'm growing a wide variety of Proteas, leucadendrons (the foliage ones) and one or two leucospermums (the pin cusion Proteas) from seed, i've got 2 massive tray fulls of 1 year old seedlings attempting to overwinter in my draughty greenhouse, fingers crossed!

I tend to use it on other fora too (not all gardening related) but increasingly its already been taken!

that was a bit long and rambling, i apologise!

When I got my plot I'd go round to chat to the other plotholders, and they'd ask where I was, and I'd say that plot on the corner, the one with two sheds ... though one fell down so now I've only got the one (sssshhhhhh!)

I don't think I've explained myself here yet. I started on forums when I was a hockey goalkeeper, and decided to refer to my club (winged sandals god, can never remember was he Greek or Roman), and be cocky about my skills at the same time (all keepers have a bit of a God complex, but I usually only let it out when talking to other keepers).

Then I joined a parenting forum, but at the time I was doing a lot of travelling, so Winged One still seemed appropriate.

And now I just seem to have adopted it for any forum that I join (I can't guarantee that all WO's that you meet are me, but I have certainly joined a few in my time, not active on most though). I do love looking at the robin following me around the garden though, and the magpies and crows up on the plot, so it's still not a bad handle (I used to watch birds when I was a tiddler, sitting in the boot of dad's then defunct Ford Zephyr in the back garden, with the lid pulled down and watching the trees behind the house for hours, so I guess it was a good idea from way way back).

I live on the Isles of Scilly, the setting for Sir Walter Besant's novel "Armorel of Lyonesse" Although, strictly speaking, she lived on Samson which is now uninhabited

Well mines a boring reason and I think at the time I hadn't realised how imaginative most people are choosing names. In hindsight I should have picked Windy Miller but the avatar makes up for that. Also given the alarming regularity my plot seems to flood maybe Capatin Nemo would be more appropriate!!

Why the name Workhorse, well, I'm just that. Can't bare sitting around, must be doing something, so Workhorse seemed just the ticket.
