are there any other veg growers from the borders on the vine.

hands being idle they are turning to the devil's work. veggiechicken must be contagious

the estate I live on has extensive walled gardens in total misuse, reverted to grass and weeds

I was thinking that if we could get a small group together and approach the duke to reinstate the gardens, can't imagine he would have a problem if it didn't cost him money or effort, could also put some PR spin on it by donating produce to charities or involving schools or other groups. lots of possibilities,

    anyone nearby? interested?

Sounds like a solid idea, but I am too far away, good luck.

I also am too far away, unless we move house ;-)

Have you got any local horticultural clubs, or libraries/shops which take postcard ads?

Wonderful idea! I also don't live on the borders but getting overgrown areas, especially walled gardens, must appeal to some people. May I suggest before you meet the Lord who owns the areas that you put together a plan stating who are the interested parties, who is going to supervise the projects, measure the space and draw some garden designs including pathways, compost bins, lockable equipment storage (if needed), flower, veg, fruit and herb beds, any health and safety issues that may arise, roughly how much time and money will be needed to not only get it up and running but also the upkeep and how that will be managed, and who will benefit. You could create a logo, print some cards or leaflets with it on plus contact details and give them out to various places such as gardening stores, builders' merchants, in fact anyone who could be persuaded to donate stuff such as scaffolding boards for bed edging, broken flags for paths, old bags of compost, some sharp sand, mushroom compost, rotted manure, a few outdoor plastic chairs - the list goes on, but Freecycle may also be a good place to try. If you do your homework it will show your determination so best of luck.
I work very hard so please don't expect me to think as well!

A few years ago my late other half and I were invited to Chicksands for a sort of get together. We were wandering the grounds and came across a man with a wheelbarrow. He was wearing old clothes and a rather delapidated hat. We stopped for a chat and he was on a mission to restore the walled gardens and greenhouses. We were interested and he showed us round and told us his plans.

It was later when we went back indoors to the meal and speeches etc that we found out he was the Commanding officer and actually hated these semi formal events. I've often wondered since then if he ever succeeded in his ambition.

While I was slightly jesting on my post last night, check out the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2016 and more specifically the Community Empowerment (Scotland) Act 2015.

There is just over 1200 landowners who own 2/3 of the land in Scotland - it's time to change that statistic.

                  Reclaim our land !!!
