You need some fresh stems about pencil thickness - nothing old and tired. I'm going to be taking some soon as I want some roses from the house I'm hoping to sell.
I don't have an option about when to take them, its now or never - so it'll be now!
I shove them in the ground where I want them to grow and leave them to it.Comment

Roses do grow easily from hardwood cuttings. Make them about a foot long, bury them to half their depth in sandy soil in a sheltered spot, leave for a year.
Be aware of rose patents though, these last for 20 years after introduction of the plant. If you propogate such a rose you're breaking the law.Comment
