  • Fascist Dictators !!!

    I'm turning into one perhaps.
My allotment site is owned by the council but run by the committee - I'm on the committee.
Committee has done a good job (IMNSHO) of turning the site into something that equates to a well run site that has social stuff for those that want, some regs to keep things shipshape and a community that has a good percentage of people willing to do a bit extra for the good of the site as a whole.
    Lovely.
However, every year it would seem that 1 or 2 in 50 of the plots end up being a pain the the backside. I'm not really willing to put up with it anymore so I either resign from the committee or we tighten up rules and enforce them *exactly* the same across the board. Perhaps, apart from Abyssinia and WW2 and many other things, Mussolini had it right - I just need to get the uniform when we do plot inspection.

We did a walk around today and there are maybe 10% of plots that need to be sorted. Many have let us know that they have family issues / health problems but its always those who do't tell us anything that kick off. Anyhow rant over - I think I've just gone from being Mr Nice to Mr Nasty.

    Any advice from others?

Its a shame when people don't look after their plots. I was just speaking to Jay-el today about how lucky we are that we never have problems like that on our site!

The plots further up the bank are a disgrace, they are all fenced with new fences, all have a clump of rhubarb in the same spot along with a blackcurrant bush and a little wicker gate.
I was there the other day and someone had the efrontary to allow a weed to grow, right next to the wicker gate. Of course I reported it to their Secretary who told me he would make inroads to get that person chucked off. Dammed right, sez I.

I can see it must be infuriating. On the other hand, my committee is depressing because they work on a blinkered pack mentality and are so completely bogged down in their own importance that they cannot begin to comprehend the value of, say, having a conversation with a plotholder. I guess there's a fine balance between pointy sticks and friendly nudging!

Maybe you could just change the terms of reference and think of yourself as a benevolent dictator.

Photos are from 7/7/2017 its even higher and more overgrown now

The council have told us site reps that if there is no waiting list they will not be issuing improvement notices or evicting the tenants, they would rather have an overgrown plot that is paid for rather than one that isn't. But that means that other plot holders can't keep it strummed to stop the weeds going to seed.

^^^ we've got one fairly cantankerous old-boy who we believe may strim any out of control plots - we aren't detectives per-se so haven't investigated this particular issue too hard
