This is my first year growing conference pear, i have a good crop , but what do i do ? leave them on the tree or take them off and put in a dark place also this is the first year i have had a good crop of "gourmande pears " i have had the tree about seven years i nearly chopped it down . thank you

If I remember correctly you should take the pears off a few days before you need them and leave them in a window to ripen. Leave the remainder. So if you want say five on Saturday take them off now and leave in a window. If you want more next Tuesday do the same on Saturday. They don't ripen well on the tree but don't leave them on until it gets cold, they die of shock!!

Anyway that is what I did when I had a pear tree about three years ago!!

Conference are brill in that they can be eaten before they go soft...in fact , when I last looked I had about 6 on my tree ( the frost nipped the flowers this year)
*heads off to check on them......
