  • New canes in August on autumn raspberry canes

    Hi
This year my autumn raspberries are now fruiting really well but there are new canes growing as if they are summer raspberries. Anyone know what I should do with them? And why has this happened?

They can carry on growing and fruiting until October in a good year, so I wouldn't worry about it. You may get a bumper late harvest

Just cut them all to the ground in the winter as normal.

any stems that do not fruit have grown too late for this year, I tie these in to supporting wires to protect them from gales over the winter and they will flower/fruit in late june/ july next year, so you will have some early as the "proper" stems will take over in august/ September etc, so you then get a long cropping period. with our shorter summers here we get this most years, without it being a disaster, and the stems branch a lot, so you end up with more fruit, eventually..

I do the same as Buffs only difference if the canes are tall I cut them down to two to three feet. Seems to work well for me.
        Location....East Midlands.
