    Hi all
    I'm getting my first allotment in September, I'm very excited Is like to ask if you could recommend me few books for a begginer. I've got tiny kitchen garden with few tomatoes, courgettes chillies beans etc already. I know allotment is an long term business and I want to be prepared.

    Hi Annacabbie, we also grew in the back garden before hopping up to an allotment. I enjoyed Charles Dowding's Vegetable Course that I borrowed from the library and found it a useful and inspiring guide.
    Also have Mark Diaconos' Veg Patch which is good for reference and also conveys his passion for the joy of growing for the table.

      My favourite book on growing stuff to eat is :-
      Grow Your Own Fruit and Vegetables by Lawrence D. Hills

      I have loads of other gardening related books - I'm a much better reader than a gardener :-)

        Who needs a book when you've got this forum. Also, my Father's Day present this year from my kids was a subscription to Grow Your Own magazine. Great mag.

          Hello, and welcome to the grapevine.

          I got my plot about this time last year, its ideal for having a bit of time to get the ground prepared over the winter -when the weeds don't grow so well

          As others have said, there is a lot of useful info in the how to grow section of this site, as well as from the forum.

          The one book I've used was the RHS 'vegetable and fruit gardening' which I picked up at a discount book shop - I cannot compare it to others on the market, but I've certainly found it handy to have a reference book in the car that I can use when I'm at the allotment with no internet connection!
