  • Winter radishes

Now is the time to sow your winter radishes - according to the packets!
Every year I mean to grow them - and forget to sow them at the right time. So here's a little reminder to me and anyone else who is forgetful, to rootle around in your seed stash and see what you can find!

    I've found (sow by date/# = in date) -

    Chinese Dragon F1 (Aug 2015)
    Neptune F1 (Aug 2013)
    Mantanghong (June 2015)
    Black Spanish Round (2018) #
Tsukushi Spring Cross F1 (Aug 2013)
    Scarlett China ???
Mooli Mino Early (July 2017) #
    Kulata Cerna (2017) #
    Mooli (June 2015)
    Daikon (2017)#

Red meat/Watermelon (2017 +) Maybe same as Mantanhong

How embarrassing is that? I keep buying seeds but not sowing them! Apparently, radish seeds stay viable for 5 years so they may all have a chance!

I'm thinking about how & where to sow some - buckets or open ground? Mixed seeds or individuals? Maybe use as ground cover and hope for the best

Anyone else growing these creatures or have any experiences to share?

I sowed them in open ground about 1-2cm apart and thinned them (they get quite big so maybe not that close). Cooked them roasted or in soups which I liked but OH didn't. Very good thinly sliced in stirfries and really really hot raw.....

Never tried the mooli before though. Found the black Spanish round stood really well into the winter in the ground which is useful.

          Confusion about variety names (again)!

Black Spanish Round & Kulata cerna were both sold by Mr F and have identical photos on the packets!

Kulata cerna apparently means "Black radish".

Franchi sell Ramolaccio D'Inverno Nero Tondo which is also a round black radish and Chiltern Seeds sell 'Winter Round Black Spanish' (or 'Noir Gros Rond d'Hiver').

I think they're all the same

I think so to - mine are from real seeds. What I can't work out is why I can grow winter radish but not summer. ....... (think it's the slugs - winter ones seem to shrug them off )

Can't help sorry. I only grow radish as a micro green.
But you have just reminded me of something, thanks VC.

SP runs off to start a new thread!

I keep threatening to grow some, our local Indian restaurant puts Mooli in their curries and are very nice.

Thanks for thinking of me SP
I have those but missed them off my list initially. They have several names too - Watermelon, Red Meat , Beauty Heart.
There's a similar one called Mantanghong which claims to be a British bred version of Beauty Heart and is F1!

One wonders why they have to be F1 when there are identical non F1 ones - or am I being suspicious?
