  • Growing with rhubarb!

I have lots of rhubarb plants - not because I'm a big fan of it but because its the earliest "fruit" of the year and I like the way it grows - its dramatic, a real statement plant.
The rhubarb plants occupy a bed about 8 x 20 and there is a lot of space between the plants. In winter, they die back and there is little trace of them, so little I have to mark them with sticks in case I step on them!
I'm thinking of growing summat in between the rhubarb, to fill the spaces and act as living mulch. It needs to be pickable in winter before the rhubarb grows and not need to be cleared in spring.
At the moment I'm thinking of a random mix of lettuce/spinach/oriental greens.
Anyone have better suggestions or is this just another of my nutty notions!

My first thoughts are of rocket. Fairly shallow roots, likes damp and semi shade but would have to be started somewhere else before the rhubarb leaves died back.

You might try corn salad, which actually grows through the winter and is good at self seeding. It seems to have fairly shallow roots.

        How about clover?

It won't give you an edible crop but would give the pollinators something to visit.

What about green manure. You could quickly hoe it in when it's grown and it will feed the soil too

            Thanks for your suggestions
I don't want you to think its a neat and tidy bed so, here's most of it. The rest is the far side of the tree stump.............
