  • Inferior Broccoli Seeds? (Sprouting)

    Hello there!

Just signed up and this is my first thread.

I've been sprouting broccoli seeds in glass germination jars for 2 months but I've had some differences when using cheaper broccoli sprouts from a different supplier.

    The differences were:
    1. Stronger 'ripe' smell (noticeable as you approach the sprouting area)
    2. After rinsing (twice a day) the water that drains has a greenish hue.
    3. When rinsing more tiny particles seemed to drain out into the sink as if the agitation was causing the sprouts inside to breakup.

Is this any cause for concern? I've eaten two of these latest batches and had no issues but I don't want to get ill.

    My current protocol for sprouting:
    1. Let seeds soak overnight in the germination jar (vogel Biosnacky Germinator).
    2. Drain and rinse twice a day for 5 days.
    3. Harvest. I let my sprouts sit in 70 degree water for 10 minutes.

Sorry, can't help you there. Mine get about 3 months to come to fruition!

Hi and welcome! Sorry but know nothing about sprouting broccoli seeds in this way.
Maybe rinse them more frequently each day?
Were the seeds sold as suitable for sprouting or were they treated with something like a fungicide?

I'll try 3 times a day then maybe. It's tricky as I'm out during the daytime most days.
Yes they were sold as sprouting seeds. I've had to throw 3-4 batches out as I didn't trust them - they looked over-ripe, wilted instead of crisp and bouncy. I've also put them on slightly most of an elevated angle in the germination jars now too so hopefully they drain even better. Thanks for your reply.
