I seem to have an abundance of Lemon balm in a corner of my garden , what sort of soil and sun does lemon balm like so I know what else is possible to grow there

Lemon Balm isn't too fussy about where it grows. It'll grow all over the place - quite literally as it related to mint and spreads by creeping rhizomes in the same way. It does like a bit of shade and moist soil. It will die back over winter and grow back in spring.

Surely it'll be easy to observe the amount of sun that patch gets and look at the soil if you want to know what it's like? If you are going to put anything else there it'll have to compete with the lemon balm so you may have to get that under control first.

I tend to grow this (and mint) in large pots buried in the ground with large holes in the base (or the bottom cut out) and with a few centimetre of the pot above ground.

I seem to have it growing all over the garden. I bought a plant in 2002 and it seems to have spread everywhere. The same happened with valerian. It could be worse I suppose!

I think it'll grow anywhere - I have some in sun, some in shade and some in the middle.

Yep! Anywhere! As far as I'm concerned it's a weed.

            Is this a serious question?

If you want to know what sort of soil and sun that lemon balm likes, then you could look somewhere where it's growing in abundance. Like the corner of your own garden.
