  • What's wrong with my potatoes

I lifted some potatoes today, or I should say I removed some potato leaves from the garden, good health leaves but no potatoes attached, so had to empty one of my buckets, which had enough for three meals, so what could cause the lack of potatoes in the ground?

Maybe the ground was colder or not as well watered so they're a bit slower to produce?

What sort are they Rary and how long have they been in. I'm wondering if they just aren't ready yet. My Kestrel and Charlottes are both weeks behind compared to other years.

Were there any tiny potatoes attached to the roots, or nothing at all? Might the ones that were there have fallen off and still be in the soil?

This year has been tricky with some big swings in temperature (particularly at some times in Scotland when nights were about 20C colder than days), and at times it has been extremely dry. Neither is great for potatoes.

I think you could be right Penellype, it could be the cold at night that could have caused the problem as I have some pots outside with small potatoes in them where as the first pot was in the greenhouse so many thanks for pointing that out

Just an update 're the temperature at night, last night at 20.30hrs. the temperature in the greenhouse was showing 24c and this morning the overnight temp. had dropped to 9c so still a cool night temp. even when we have high day temps.
