  • Hens, allotments, bye-laws

    Hi

I have just taken up an allotment within my local town council area but chickens/hens are not allowed? I have checked the Allotment Act but cannot find any bye-laws for my area that says I can't have these? I used to have an allotment 3 miles down the road within a parish council area which allowed this? Can anyone give me some advice, I do not want to allienate anyone as it is a great allotment community but I would like a couple of hens on my patch. Many thanks in advance.

My understanding is the Allotment Act trumps council-made regs, but only if the allotment site is council land and not private, where the landowner can exclude them.

Perhaps asking the council or the committee why there is a ban might help?

We allow chickens (not cockerels) on our site, up to 4 per half plot.
