  • Update on my new girls.

As I had written previously, Bella, Beanie and Babs came home on Saturday and had a really good afternoon and evening eating and drinking and sleeping in the coop.
On Sunday, they all came out of the coop and Beenie and Babs started eating and drinking. Bella, who was the really skinny one with hardly any feathers did not. She stood in the corner and tucked her head in shut her eyes. She was more or less stayed like that all day. I tried to hand feed her (she ate out of my hand on Saturday) no luck, I scattered feed all around her and water next to her, put some layers mash in warm water and mixed up for her, she wasn't interested in anything. I tried to catch her a couple of times but couldn't and I felt it was stressing her out. She wouldn't go into the coop either, she just stood in the corner looking miserable. I put a fleecy blanket in the run for her to stand on, which she did. Then put fleecy blankets, bubble wrap and cardboard over most of the coop and run, covered with a tarpaulin.
As night time fell the other two went to bed and she stayed downstairs on the fleecy. When I got up in the morning 6am, I pulled the covers back a bit to let in some light, fully expecting to find Bella dead. No, she opened her eyes walked over to the water and started to drink. Then toddled over to the feeders and started to eat.
Wow, I was soooo happy but shocked that she could look so bad one day but almost back to herself the next morning. All of Monday she started to get better and better. Took herself to bed at night and snuggled up in the straw as did Beanie and Babs.
Now on Wednesday afternoon the three of them seem to be thriving, long may it continue.
Now I have a couple of questions. Do the members think, with her being so thin and scrawny, maybe she just ate too much and it just overloaded her system? Or was the stress of leaving the battery, the travelling and everything was too much for her? She was the one that went for the rescue man and me when we tried to catch her. So she is definitely a wee fighter!

Possibly the stress. But she woke up to find herself in the same place as the day before, so all cool as far as she was concerned.

    I'm only guessing, mind!

Possibly the stress of the move, the new surroundings, different food, possibly different water, grass, freedom, peace and quiet, it could be any/all of those and more.
Important now to leave her to get on with life with plenty to eat and drink, but keep a close eye on them all for anything a little untoward.
Well done for taking them on & enjoy.
Feed the soil, not the plants.
