  • Lovage leaves going brown

Well for the life of me I have no idea why seemingly hardy and tough plant like Lovage should suddenly develop brown and drying leaves but they are all going that way fast. It's in a pot with some garden soil (which it is supposed to like) and pro quality nursery compost. It is placed in full sun but doesn't get it all day.

How big's the pot, Marb? My lovage is 4-5' tall and would need a huge pot to contain it.
Treat it like celery and give it lots of water.

        Is it a young plant?
        Don't let it dry out.

It's part of an old one I split into three plants at the beginning of spring.

Check that it's not leaf miner, lovage is quite prone to that.

Very handy to know. Mine's a young plant and in a 15in pot on my balcony. Sounds like it won't be able to stay there unless I keep replacing with new young plants.

You may be able to keep it small with constant picking. I could feed the whole of Wales with mine!

Can you give us some lovage recipes.

I have just replanted my lovage to a 3 litre pot but prob will go for a 7.5 litre pot in the middle to the end of July.

Mine is also going brown and the ants keep being attracted.

Will constant picking harm the plant

If you want a more petit plant that doesn't require you to feed an army to keep it down you could look at Scots Lovage, which only gets a couple of feet tall.
