  • Over the top again!

Had a count up yesterday and I have 176 different brassica plants in the greenhouses! not to mention those already out.

I like Cauliflowers but do I really need 40 or 28 Brussels ?

Do you grow far in excess of your needs?

Nope! But I would if I had the space. I like to give things away, anyway, and people always seem happy to get thriving plants or fresh veg.

The only brassica I 'minimise' on is PSB. It is in the ground so long, grows to an enormouse size and only I like eating it in the family! I normally sow a pinch in a pot and then take out the best six plants which is ample for me.

Two dozen sprouts and two dozen calabrese planted out!

            Nah!

Of course I'll make best use of 54 chilli plants, n not to mention the 45 tomato plants! ..................

Yes, but I have been better this year and culled some of the seedlings. I am so proud of myself.

I used to, but with the ever increasing cost of seed, I now grow enough plus half a dozen for spares, though the leeks sprouted better than most, so I did give a few to a neighbour.

Well, it's not as if 36 Yacon plants are going to take up that much space is it

Over the top!! Me!!! Don't be ridiculous. I don't know why you even ask
                        Of course I am
However, its all in the name of experiment. The 30-40 different tomatoes I'm growing this year is to help me choose my favourites so that I won't have to do it again next year
I'm not growing 140 spring cabbages this year or 15 types of kale. Been there, done it and I'm totally brassicaed off growing more - just to feed the wildlife.
However, the beans and squash seeds are about to be selected from the seed buckets - and I'm can't limit myself with those, can I?
VC wanders off, dreaming of an impenetrable squash and bean forest where hummingbirds nest...................

I count it as a failure if I don't eat or use everything I grow (providing of course that it is edible). However I also don't buy any veg, so there is a fine dividing line between to much and too little. The things I do tend to grow too much of are PSB, courgettes and runner beans. I've actually grown too few tomato plants this year and I will use the opportunity to go to the garden centre and buy a couple of varieties that I have not had before to see if they are any good.

Any excuse for a trip to the garden centre

                            Lettuce seedlings!

Sometimes you end up with anything down from 40 cos Mr Snail and family have an impromptu midnight feast....or about 200 if they choose to munch on something else!!!!

We never chuck anything out...tis either given away or grown on in a rough area of the field for the chooks/bunny.
Inevitably if the ones in the field succeed they tend to produce more than the carefully tended ones in the potager!

Yes, every year there's at least one crop which I've gone overboard on. I've the same mindset at Penellype - if it grows it has to be used - so I'm now very wary about sowing too many runner beans, tomatoes or courgettes.

This year I think my accidental glut is going to be romanesco brocolli....I've got tray upon tray of seedlings which all deserve to be planted out.

And on the flower front I seem to have overdone it this year with wallflower seedlings, though at least they don't take up as much space as a giant brassica.
