Well I just can't understand what has happened to my 3 week old pond oxygenators I purchased from a aqua nursery. I was told that they can go as deep as 3 foot in my pond. I have had them as deep as about 1.5 ft and they very quickly sent long stems out but have broken from the main plant and float in the water, some with roots on. They don't seem to like the mud they are in (compost in pot when purchased) as they come loose. I don't have any fish, just frogs so what is wrong please ?

I do not have those varieties in my pond,but have had no bother with the ones i do,i cannot tell from your pic,but all my baskets are lined with porus fabric,before i fill with aquatic compost,not plastic,i let it overhang the basket a bit,and but small stones,gravel on top off the compost,this keeps it all in place,i also tye some string/rope,to the basket,it is good for both entering it into the water slowly to let the air out and thus keep the compost in and manovering it to where you wany it,also for getting out for maintenance,sorry if am saying what you already know

I found this bit of info,it could be breaking away purposefully-
"Ranunculus aquatilis is a spreading, invasive species whose flowers and stems are often submerged under-water.
Remove all old, dying or dead leaves and stems in autumn to avoid polluting the water. Should stems break and fall into the water, they will most probably produce roots from the leaf nodes — another way for the plant to spread."
You could use some gravel & sand to pot up the floating free plants?

I do have rams horn snails, tadpoles and frogs. The plants are not being eaten as such, just uprooted. I have placed the pots in the shallow end, just below the surface so I can keep an eye on them. I just have to get used to the fact that anything new I buy, however healthy and well looked after will ultimately end up dead.

Well the water crowfoot is just getting smaller and smaller with parts of the stem going very thing as if the chlorophyll is being sucked out. Everytime I replant the roots in the pot they are unearthed next day. It's a mysteryComment

Marb have you tried following Jungle Janes and Lotties advice of covering the plants with gravel/small stones ? That's what we did with our aquatic plants when we had a pond and never had a problem with them being uprooted.Location....East Midlands.Comment
