  • Woolly aphids on apple

My apples have got an infestation of woolly aphids. Is there any better solution than trying to wash them off with a hosepipe?

Stiff brush? - think that they can be controlled with chemicals if you are open to that on your edibles...

I scrub them with a toothbrush and an organic pest spray (which is pretty much veg oil)

I use garlic infused water with a dot of liquid soap to help it stick to the leaves, squashing them all as I go around. The smell of garlic stays around for a while & gives a reduction in aphids the next day. When I sprayed my plum tree with garlic it moved the infestation of aphids on to the shrub next to the plum tree, like any leaf was better than there, soap & water alone doesn't have as much impact, they all seem to return the next day like you haven't done anything. Good luck with it,do they overwinter on the apple tree, does the oil drown them before they awake? So if you sprayed it in March or something you could stop them maybe?

Per RHS "Research indicates that earwigs on fruit trees can reduce aphid numbers and on fruit trees they do not cause damage. Providing shelters such as flower pots loosely stuffed with hay in trees can help increase numbers."

Maybe later they can be moved from the dahlia patch.
