  • Sharpening shears

Have two pairs of really blunt shears.
Can anyone recommend an effective sharpening tool I can buy,
Or a webpage that gives a definitive tutorial on how to DIY?

First bit of advice is, that unless you are a pro stay away from electric sharpeners you can do more harm than good and very quickly.

Most people will suggest a decent flat file followed by either a oil stone or sand paper.

Step 1, undo the nut and separate the blades noting where the washers go and keeping them safe, clamp the blade bevelled edge towards to in a vice if you have one.

Step 2, holding the file to mimic the factory made angle on the blade file down the metal so as to reveal clean metal along its length. Go from one end of the blade to the other in one complete stroke, do not file a bit and then move along.

Step 3, when your happy remove the blade from the vice and with your oil stone or sandpaper on a flat surface gently remove the burr from the flat side of the blade again using full length strokes. Repeat on other blade.

Step 4, Clean the blade with wire wool, oil and reassemble making sure the nut is tight enough but not over tight, if the blades are loose they can be forced apart during use and will fail to cut cleanly.
