  • Unused coffee

Quick question I bought tin of wrong kind of coffee I won't use. Is it ok to mix it with compocompost I'll grow courgettes?

Like a lot of others here on the vine I add used coffee ground to my compost bin so unless you've got more coffee than compost I'm sure it'll be fine.

Coffee grounds are acidic so are best added to the likes of Blueberries, Rhododendrons, Azaleas etc.

Is there a difference between spent coffee grounds where alot of the stuff has been washed out into your cup and unused coffee which still has all that stuff in it.

How does all all that caffeine affect the courgettes?

Although the grounds are acidic, will that pH transfer into the soil after they've been broken down by bacteria?

Caffeine's a growth inhibitor. I have no clue whether a tin of it is enough to stunt anything, but I would probably add it to fresh compost that needs time to rot down, rather than to anything I was using straightaway.

On the plot we took over a few months ago, I used the contents on the 2 daleks that had sat for 2 years and noticed lots of broken egg shells in the mix. Could this newbie ask why?

Apart from adding a bit of Calcium, I think egg shells are mainly used to deter slugs.

I had a dalek full of various bits including eggshells which spent most of the year mellowing. I emptied this bin onto a bed last autumn. This spring a fellow plot holder (who shall remain nameless, if not silent) prodded the remains of the pile and asked about the egg shells (which were still whole at that time).

In reference to the idea that the sharp bits of egg shells deter slugs - has anybody looked at the photos of slugs and snails crawling over razor blades?
