  • Unbelievable animals!

Just had to share this pic with you! My OH had a shooting friend called Mike visit us the other week. He'd brought his gun dog so they all went down our field for a target shoot and a chat. Suddenly our tortie cat Daphne decided, as it is her territory, she'd better have a look at what's going on. Next thing is Daphne (who has never had a dog anywhere near her) came out of the dyke brae and jumped on one of the chairs. Dog looked towards her, Mike said "No! Leave!" and here is the pic he took. Flipping unbelievable!!

The dog has clearly been in contact with cats...and knows who is boss!

Just look at his 'ignoring her whilst keeping an ear out ' expression

    Lovely piccie!
    She's a lovely colour isn't she?

Nothing like a well trained gun dog, though I do prefer a spaniel, but then again I would wouldn't I.

This is my lad Jack, two years of misery (for me) training him then many years of joy. Like the lad above bottom nailed to the ground until he is told he can move. Long gone now but never forgotten.

Beautiful animals. Nicos is right, the dog has probably met other cats. But just the mere fact of the cat being confident will have made the dog think she's not prey, whether it has seen a cat before or not. Plus, the dog is probably slightly nervous at the cat being higher than it.

I have 2 dogs. They are brother and sister from the same litter. I've had Hollie from 6 weeks and I love her to bits. Prince was taken on because her owner was pregnant and gave him to her parents. Her dad isn't into dogs and he got a few kicks. He was going to blue cross so I adopted him at 11months. I've had dogs all my life and Prince is definitely the most intelligent. My most problem i have with him is that he doesn't like cats, and we have them both sides of us. My new Next door neighbour has two cats one of which heads to its previous home when let out so she's being kept indoors for the time being. She sits in a window over the communal passage and it drives Prince nuts.

Working dogs tend to be different in their temperament, they are amongst the most highly trained of the working dogs.

Labs tend to be used for pure retrieving, whilst the spaniel will be used to hunt and retrieve, once they have been told NO or given the sit command they will ignore the world and concentrate on the man with the gun after all he is the one who will give them the treat they long for. The retrieve, they are taught from a young age (training starts at about 10/12 weeks) that this is just for them, even in training retrieving is usually limited to one a day to keep them keen.

They tend to ignore absolutely everything except their handler, if a spaniel has been sent forward to hunt the ground he will work some 20 yards in front of the gun crossing from left to right and back, a dangerous place to be. If a rabbit pops up 35 yards away (to far) the dog will give chase but a short peep on the whistle will stop him dead, he will turn and look at you, see a raised right arm and sit, awaiting the next instruction.

Cats usually sit above whatever is making them a bit unsure; even so, she was so content to sit there as she's looking one way and the dog is looking the other way. This well-trained dog was told by his trainer to leave her be, so maybe it his posture, no hormone (or whatever) smell of possible imminent danger, and my OH being there as well that made her feel so confident. She is the most beautiful and talkative cat and the colour of her fur when the sun shines on it is just glorious!

Potty, wish you could have come and trained ours when they were puppies, one word from me and they did their own thing!

I didn't know a lot about training but on the advice of another trainer bought a book some ten weeks before I got the puppy. Then as advised by the book I had time to train the other family members before he arrived, most important that everyone sings from the same hymn sheet.

Then before anything else teach the sit command, that way when things go wrong and they will, you can sit your dog and start again, my Jack even chewed the damn book!!!!

We're down to 4 dogs now. My beagle is in her 11th year and slowing down a bit but she still zips around outside in cool weather.

I love them all. Not sure what I'll do when mine is gone. If I replace her I may give another shelter dog a permanent home.

I can barely remember when there wasn't a dog around.

The other 3 dogs are 2, 5 year (next month) old male German Shepherd Dogs that were litter mates and a scrappy little Cairn Terrier that's about 8 years old. I won't talk about the rest of our menagerie.
