  • What to grow in my Brand New Polytunnel

I have finally got delivered my Brand New Polytunnel after a month and am itching to put it up (At the weekend if the weather decides to hold off) I am wondering what's the most productive things to grow in the Polytunnel and what would be better outside to maximise the space?

I've had my poly about 5 years and have had 2 covers, don't rush to put together as a couple of polys on our site have been trashed by the weather. Take the cover off when you're plants have finished. Great for Tom's, chillis, cucumbers. I've got some guttering in mine to start off some seeds. I keep the door rolled up in the summer and just put some scaffold netting in place.

Do polytunnels have to be in direct sunlight?

It helps as the covers are slightly opaic and not clear like a GH glass.

Second year owning a polytunnel this year, tomatoes cucumbers, cucamelons, peppers and chilliest were my poison last year, with some buckets with carrots in to boot. The carrots were a winner as they avoided the dreaded carrot fly which was a bonus

I should be all alright with this Polytunnel as I brought it from Haygrove soo should really withstand the weather whatever gets thrown at it

And the Polytunnel is 3m wide by 4m in Length, I didn't want it too wide as I didn't want it taking up too much room and it cost enough as it is lol the length should all be alright for me :P

To answer your original question, I grow Tomatoes, Cucumber, French Beans, Courgettes and Strawberries during the summer, followed by Lettuce, Rocket and other salad crops through the winter. Outside at the allotment, I grow Sweetcorn, Peas, Potatoes, Cabbages, Raspberries and bush fruit.

The strawberries in the polytunnel are to get an early crop, I grow them in MFBs suspended from the supports and then put them outside when they've cropped.

Mine's dedicated to soft fruit trees (Peach, Nectarine & Apricot) to avoid leaf curl.....under-planted with Strawbs.........painting 'em's a bit of a pain though..........

I had a plan to grow the sort of stuff that's either expensive or just not around fresh, I love lima or butterbeans(also called fava beans, nice with a bottle of Chianti, for those who remember agent Starling in the silence of the lambs). Went for a large glass house in the end, but may still have a go at some rarer things in that instead of just tommies.

                      New Polytunnel

We have just had our polytunnel delivered - was wondering how successful it would be to grow melons? I already have cucumber and tomato seeds coming up in the greenhouse ( or rather our neighbour has as his greenhouse is heated). I am so looking forward to getting a lot more out of it especially salad stuff - it's 12 feet wide by 20 feet long.
