  • Powerline!

Due to the carpy cheapo wi-fi extender I bought a while back, I'm looking at getting these tomorrow. Anyone have any experience as they seem perfect for my needs.

Well, we tried plug in boosters - not those but a different brand. They are lounging somewhere in the attic! They didn't work for us.

Did you make sure the Ethernet cables ran on the same electrical circuit as that will affect their performance.

I have a similar thing with my BT to package which works a treat connecting the TV box to the router via the mains cables. Seems to work fine.

What are you using it for? I have a couple of these at home as the 1m thick stone walls in our cottage play havoc with our wifi: Belkin Wi-Fi Range Extender

They grab a weak signal and amplify it. I have one outside the back door which throws the signal about 40m down the garden so I now have wifi in the shed!

I want to hardwire my PC in the living room to my TV. I'm currently using a wireless netgear extender but it often drops the signal causing buffering. I like the sound of powerline as the speed should be very close to the original speed from the router which is in the kitchen.

We have a pair of BT ones that offer 500mbps which cost £35 at the time, they work really well. It connects from the router to my daughters TV in her bedroom. The instructions said to avoid attaching to extension leads as this reduces performance so I had imagined that I would need to wire up an extra socket but we haven't found it necessary and it works off the extension seamlessly.

Cheers John, the ones I'm getting can be run off an extension lead which is good news but am told to avoid running through a RCD.

My consumer unit has an RCD fitted, so the whole house is covered, you might want to check yours if it may cause a problem.

We have a netgear homeplug which uses the electricity cables in the house to transfer internet to and from the router and then broadcasts it as wifi
This works brilliantly and can be used in any socket throughout the house.

Cheers Nic, sounds very similar to these then, just a different make.

I took cuttings of mine last year, they still haven't come up?
Other than that, I have no idea what you are all talking about!

Cheers Trip, did you notice a drop in speed from one room to another?...... I did a couple of speed tests via Ethernet: Laptop connected direct to the hub came out @ 60Mbps..........took the Laptop into the room where the extender is, connected it to the extender via the Ethernet & it came out around 30Mbps, I was expecting the readings to be closer, maybe they are on a different wiring circuit. I shouldn't complain really as the UK average is around 29Mbps.

Sorry only seeing this now... Haven't done that particular comparison, no...

I use some similar TP link units around the house to link TV sets and Games consoles to the main Router. All on the two ring mains (upstairs and down). Via a newish main house panel (5 years ago). I find then quite satisfactory for the speed of our so called High speed web connection.
