  • Comfrey Advice Needed

Hi there. I was looking for some advice on growing and using Comfrey. I bought some Bockingford seeds with the intention of using the leaves for liquid fertiliser/feed.

Any advice whatsoever would be apppreciated. Best methods for creating the liquid would be great.

    Kind Regards..........Rob

Never heard of Bockingford Comfrey but have heard of Bocking 14 which is used for tea. I have a 4ft length of drainpipe fastened vertically to the fence which I pack with comfrey leaves, a jam jar is fixed to the bottom of the pipe, this collects the juice which is then diluted down. I also have a large trug of water with a lid, Comfrey leaves are put into a netted laundry bag & hung into the water also to create an already diluted tea.

Put the plant (s) where they can stay. They deep root which is great to extract the nutrients but bad if you want the soil area for something else. Making the tea is good but put it away from housing because it stinks. Along with nettle tea it provides gest plant food.

Sorry, I meant Bocking 14. That's a good tip with the drainpipe. Do you add water at all?

Are you sure that's what you've got?
I'm pretty sure bocking 14 is sterile, you can't grow it from seed (which is very good as comfrey set seed everywhere). Bocking 14 is usually propagated from cuttings.

No water, just put the leaves in the tube, add a weighted bottle to compress the leaves & the juice will run out of the bottom. Tie the bottle to a piece of string so you can pull it out when topping up.

Just another to say Bocking 14 is sterile. Whatever seeds you have, it's not that. Cuttings are very cheap on fleabay. I got mine from there and they are lovely big plants now.

I have tried growing from seed and it wasn't over successful, sounds like I had a lucky escape, I'll look for some cuttings then.
