    Change from the norm

    Having had my plot for 3 years now and been growing run of the mill veg ive decided to have a change this year.
    So firstly im gunna grow water melon raddish black spanish raddish russian cabage black and white salsify and various other unusual veg like hamburg turnip and purple spring onions.anyway i will stop rambling and ask the question i meant to start with .
    Is there any strange veg that you are planning on geowing this year.

    Ask yourself how much black salsify you eat on regular basis before dedicating too much space to it... I grew salsify this year and it's nice to grow something different but it's not exactly a 'go to' ingredient!

      This year I am going to grow yellow beetroot - probably not that unusual but supposedly less messy than the red kind.

      Last year I grew turnip Oasis, which is billed as tasting like melon. It doesn't (at least not to me), but has a pleasant slightly refreshing taste and I am going to grow it again.

      I also grew fuchsia berries which had very pretty flowers, but although the fruits tasted pleasant enough (billed as like a cross between a kiwi fruit and a fig) I found them unpleasantly gritty and a large number fell off before they were ripe. As the plants are quite big I won't be growing them again as I can't justify the space.

        What about my pink banana squash or my blue pumkins .i wont be eating many of them either but ive got friends and family who will

            I grew black Spanish radish last year, unfortunately I'm the only one who likes them so probably won't bother this year.

            I'll be growing huazontle again - I've made my love for it well known on here Trying achocha fat baby, cutting celery, orach & kerala red leaf amaranth. Otherwise different varieties of normal veg - Greek gigantes runner beans, bijou sugarsnap peas, purple &white carrots etc.

              ^^^ I always grow Bijou mangetout, HH, I have some in the GH at the moment about 4' high. Its worth growing them year round!
              Jonny, I'm going to try watermelon radish too.
              Also planning a bird seed bed with millet and amaranth.

                I would love to give some of these a try but cannot justify the space. The best of luck to all who are growing something different.

                    I hope to pick some in spring from the pot in the GH. I'll start some more soon to plant out in March/April. Once they start producing, they keep going!
                    Here's some from last year - I think March. Definitely early because there aren't leaves on the trees

                      I shall be seeing if the crossing of my black russian/olympe tomatoes with the black indigo rose toms was successful, if so I could end up with the look of large black cannonballs, should be fun..

                        Should also have asked when you sow them to get them that early VC?!

                        Also trying sokol breadseed poppies this year. No others poppies around so if successful will save seeds for next year.

                              Last year my experiment was Delicata squash, did very well, got loads off.
                              Just making some soup with the last of them.
