  • greenhouse raised beds

im hoping to move my greenhouse up to my allotment and have been mulling over building a u shaped raised bed and a dripper set up like big mallys using a 330 liter water butt conected to the guttering out side to fill it up with rain water , im wondering what type of wood i should use (i was thinking scafold boards) and should i use a membrain or not ? also for the water butt is there some type of float device i can fit to it that will stop it over flowing when the water butt is full ,abit like something that is used on a toilet systen or in a fuel tank for the petrol gauge ,any thoughts welcome, cheers

I would use scaffold boards for the beds & just drill a hole in the top of the waterbutt as an overflow, I think you will use more water than you will collect so will have very little overflow........I'm assuming you will be raising the butt off the floor & using a tap from the bottom of it.

yes the water butt will be put on bricks or concrete slabs and about 30 cm higher than the raised beds so gravity can take care of the rest ,ok a whole in the water butt sounds like a v simple way of doing it , i like that less can go wrong with it ,good idea ,cheers

Put a hose from the waterbutt overflow into another waterbutt.
