  • What tomato varieties are you growing in 2017

I'm looking for some inspiration..I would like to grow a few varieties that I've never grown before . What tomatoes are you planning to grow this year?

Oh Scatlet, I am thinking the same thing. For the last couple of years I have tried various types but none have really stood out for me.
    Going back to traditional types.

I tried beefsteak last year but they were all tasteless. Perhaps we just didn't get enough sun or heat even though the were in the greenhouse they were very poor. Suggestions for the tastiest cherry tomatoes would be welcome as I'm going back to little-ies again as they taste better!
You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...

                    Not many types;

                    Amish paste
                    Latah
                    Roma vf

Also hoping to do swopsies with the person who gave me tigrella and moneymaker plants last year.

I've also tried beefsteak types (brandywine) but just didn't ripen - had to ripen them inside & didn't taste as good. Think we're just not warm enough.

I'd completely given up with beefsteak tomatoes until my friend said she liked them and as she had lent me her greenhouse I thought I had better try. Belle are ok, although the flavour is not great and you don't get a huge crop (8 from 1 plant last year).

Although not marketed as beefsteak, Ferline produces some very large tomatoes on the lower trusses, even outside. These took me completely by surprise last year as I was expecting normal sized fruit. They taste great.

The red tomatoes on the right are Ferline, grown outside. The others (green) are Legend, which is supposed to have large fruit, but didn't do at all well in my garden.

Its all your faults...........with no greenhouse, limited hanging basket space and absolutely no urge for anything that needs a cane I have just ordered..........

                        Yellow Ole
                        Tumbling Tiger
                        Red Robin
                        Gold Nugget
                        Totem
                        Hundreds and Thousands
                        Orangenie
                        Minibel

Thousands of tom seeds for £10.81 - bargain.

                          Gardener's Delight,
                          Sungold
                          Floridity

                          Big 'uns
                          Marmandes - 4
                          Pantano Romanesco - 6
                          Cuor di Bue - 6
Rosados de Barbastro (gert big uns - you can tell I'm originally from Bristol) - 6

                          Colgar (hanging toms) - 8
I've seen these advertised on some UK suppliers' websites. Grow them in the summer and string them up when nearly ripe and then eat over the winter. No good for salads but absolutely the bees knees for cooking. Best fried breakfast tom ever. No idea why supermarkets in the UK don't sell them at a premium. Anyway, mine from last year are still going strong in my very cold cellar. Most will probably keep till March.

This year I have decided to go back to tried and tested tomatoes.

                            Ailsa Craig.
                            Alicante.

                            Ferline.
                            Roma or San Marzano.

                            Cherry types.
                            Picollo.
                            Sungold.
