    Stolen Wheelie Bin

    We have three bins; green for garden waste, blue for recycling and black for nasty landfill waste.
    When the bins were emptied on Wednesday 28th December our blue bin was taken.
    There are only half a dozen houses nearby and it's almost certain one of them has taken it, probably for Christmas rubbish.
    Of course, while it solves their problem it now means that I'm having to throw recyclables into the black bin for landfill and at a time when we have more than normal rubbish too.

    If I knock on doors I'm sure they'll all say they only have their own bin. Access to their back gardens for a nosey isn't easy.

    At the moment, my plan is to leave our car dashcams running on special settings the day before and the day of bin collection, to see who puts out our blue bin (and if they take it away again). Then have some very strong words with them.

    Any other ideas?

    Our bins have house numbers on - so its easy to check if someone has the wrong one!

      Yes, we have numbers, although the number on ours is very small and only visible from a couple of feet away. The trouble is, even if someone has it they'll deny it and it's not easy to nosey in the neighbours gardens.

          I was wondering whether anyone had any ideas on how I can get it back sooner.
          Next blue bin collection isn't until around 11th January so I've got a lot of rubbish to deal with between now and the next collection.

              Let's face if you haven't got theirs then they have two so they should know if there is an extra one in their yard

                Might a group of teenagers have taken it for a joke. Sometimes a group who together for a night out do stupid things when they have a few drinks.
                Have you looked around the area.
                It might not be your neighbours at all.

                  Ask your neighbours. Then speak to your council as there is no telling if and when it will return.

                    Is your dashcam good enough to pick up these small numbers?

                      I'd be knocking at the neighbours to see if they "saw who took" your bin. You're not accusing them, you're asking for their help or giving them the chance to own up to a mistake

                        Yes, but I can't get near their back gardens to have a nosey and I strongly suspect they've taken it for their Christmas rubbish. It's hard to get near due to thick hedgerows and/or I would have to trespass on other people's private property to get a look over fences to see in the neighbours gardens.

                        I don't think this is an accidental taking of our bin; the most likely suspect neighbour runs a business from home and has more rubbish than their bins can hold and we've often found extra rubbish put in our bin, or seen extra rubbish put into it on bin day.

                            Hmmm......

                            I might bluff it, knock on the neighbours doors and say something like:

                            '......Someone nicked our blue bin. Before I spend a couple of hours checking recordings from the car cams, I thought I'd take the easy option of knocking on doors asking if anyone knew where it went.....'

                              Is it worth creating a possibly unpleasant situation going forward? Sure if you told the council, they'd deliver you a new one, that I would really make very obvious as to who owns it(paint it with huge stripes/numbers or something like that) I painted numbers 2 foot high on ours when someone tried to swap their dodgy wheeled one for mine.
