  • Need to dispose of grape vine

I have a grape vine on an abandoned plot at my allotments which I want to give away asap.
It has established itself very well in eight months since it had a trellis erected although the variety is unknown.
How easy is it to transplant this once it is dug up and is there any other advice I should offer to someone when they collect it.

Same rules as most soft fruit, transplant to original depth once its dormant. If its grafted make sure graft is well above ground.

Not very sure to be honest, but I know they have deep roots and you'll need to dig deep to get as much of the rootball as poss.

Sounds like it will need cutting back whilst it's dormant too??

Do you know what's happened to the plot holder? Is that their netting & pots? If they've had to abandon the plot but they've paid for the year, they could've had a family emergency or something, they might come back & that would be stealing, why are you wanting to take it ASAP? It will be fine where it is?

I was thinking the same JJ, I would not take anything from another plot without the holders permission.

I understand the OP to mean that he had planted it on an abandoned plot...which may now be in the process of being reallocated????....and would prefer to pass it onto someone rather than leave it for the new plot holders????

It's unknown but I couldn't imagine planting a grapevine on an abandoned plot at my allotments,it could become unabandoned at any point?

I "think" John manages an allotment site so I guess that this grapevine has been left on an abandoned plot by the previous tenant.
Not sure why it needs to be removed though - I'd have thought it a bonus for the next plotholder.

                  ^^^^ my thoughts exactly!

Unless there is someone keen to rehome it?...
Then it becomes their problem not John's?

                  Perhaps John needs to clarify?...
