    replacing strawbs

    Hi folks can I pick your brains/tastebuds please?

    I reckon my strawbs need replacing, had them far too long! Anyhow have just had an email from S*****s and they have an offer of 24 plants for £20, link below. Can I ask do you think this value for money? and what are you're thoughts on the varieties included? I have to admit to not having looking after my strawbs very well so want to restart and be a good growing mum and look after them better!

    Looks like a good deal to me - less than £1 per plant. I have no experience of any of those varieties though.

    I'm a terrible strawberry mum too

        I used to grow three varieties but because there was never enough of any one variety ready at the same time, reduced it to two varieties: Gariguette and Chelsea Pensioner. Depends how much space you can eevote to strawberries.

            I'll probably be arrested for admitting this, but I was at a garden centre a few years ago that had lots of neglected strawberry plants and I couldn't resist picking off a few of the runners. The plants thrived and are alive and well at my lottie but I haven't got a clue what variety they are!

              I'm sure they'll be great and having 4 varieties, means one of them has to grow

              I've just replaced mine and got 10 bare root Cambridge Favourites from eBay. I'm going to try growing sweetcorn where the strawberries were

                You could add a day neutral type into the mix, to get fruit all the way until late autumn. I've got lots of fruit on my mariguette plants still - these are a day neutral equivalent to gariguette. They have a slightly delicate but nicely rounded taste - not overly sweet or acidic, and large berries. I had to buy the plants from France though by mail order as they're a new variety, but I think they are filtering over to the UK.

                Another choice could be the very highly recommended (for taste) day neutral type Mara De Bois. I've got to try these as most people who grow them rave about their flavour.
