  • Looking for a propagator. Any advice?

I didn't get my seeds raised early enough and want to get those pepper and tomato seeds going early this year.

When I say propagator I don't mean an official crocodile.

Is it just for a few chillies and toms? I use a very old Sankey heated prop (ive probably been using it about 15 years) - its a basic model and doesn't have a thermostat control but ive always had good gemination rate regardless. It's a large one, fits two large seed trays and a few pots.

Stewart's do something similar for about £25 for a 52cm - but I have read the top lid is quite flimsy. Though (imo) would do the job. They also do a smaller version, approx £19
      A Sankey 38cm £22. Also a reasonable buy.

I remember that another grape recommended the windowsill version recently. Or you can blow all your money and buy a vitopod

Scarlet, I have a Sankey, sounds exactly like yours and have had it forever. No controlled termostate but works just fine. Looked for one last year and couldnt find one. Bought a Stewarts and yes, as you so rightly said the lid is very very flimsy. Bends very easily. Other than that its fine, just not as strong as the Sankey.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Its a brilliant bit of kit Bramble but my lid has a crack in it and so I looked at the newer ones...but I'm a bit tight and decided to stick a bit of gaffer tape over it

I have a couple of those old Sankey props too & 2 small Stewart ones........and one of those 7 tray ones that sit on the windowsill. None of them have variable thermostats and all do the same job.

Bit of a mouthful but I'll certainly keep my eyes open for that Johnny. Guess the label will stand out.

Unfortunately this has been removed from the shops Jonny due to Health & Safety concerns....concerns that the product name might fall off the receipt

I've got a Vitapod with extension to 39cm. Very big and very useful but expensive.

If you are using propagator in greenhouse it's worth putting insulation under it to reduce heat loss.
