  • Autumn broad bean sowing

    Hi all,
Going to be growing overwintering Aquadulce b/bs. most of what ive read says to plant in ground in november. Im going to be sowing in toilet rolls in greenhouse though so question is should that still be in November or can i start them off now?, thanks in advance.

I'm planning on sowing mine this week - but I am a bit further north than you. Hope is that they'll get some growth before winter weather hits but not too much.

If you start them indoors now they stand the chance of having too much soft growth and could get hit badly by frost when you put them out. They won't be any further on next spring if you sow indoors.
Sow them outside by the end of the month and there'll be enough warmth in the soil to start them off and they'll be hardened off naturally by the time they emerge.
Be ready to give protection if we get some horrendous frosts.

I shall be sowing 7 beans every month of the year because I've scrapped the calendar as well as other "rules".

I directly sowed a few rows at the start of October. I will do another few rows at the start of November and December.
Did this last year and had a fantastic crop, about 3 weeks earlier than spring planted broad beans.

I think I'm too far north to do this, I'll wait till spring I think as I grow everything in raised beds now.

I've bought a packet of broadies (who's name I have forgot) which purport to mature as early as Autumn sown broadies, from a spring sowing! I usually get a lot of losses during the winter with aquadulce so maybe its time for a change this year!

One bean a day, one week a month.

                        Top marks!!
Although I must be clear, I sow all 7 beans on the same day, in the same pot. Two rows of 3 with one in the middle for luck

Same variety or pot luck mix?

Same variety but probably different each month.
Last week it was Wizard Field beans. I'll plant them out when big enough. Ever the optimist

                              ..... yes VC ~ why 7???? I'm intrigued..........

Well I sowed some direct about a month ago - they're about 8" tall now ....... don't know if I've done the right thing by sowing them then though.....

Will they just stop growing over winter.....? And do they need netting/fleece or anything.....???
