  • Pomegranates

Yesterday I picked my pomegranate crop. The fruit varied in size from about the size of a tangerine to that of a grapefruit. What was disturbing was that of the 100 pieces of fruit I picked about 50 of them were burst open and unusable. This is the first time this has happened. I looked it up on the Internet and found that one of the reasons for fruit splitting is irregular watering. The pomegranate tree is watered automatically every day so this reason doesn't make sense. Anyone have any ideas?

No ideas, but that happens to some of my father-in-law's crop in Italy each year. He gets the least worst of them squeezed and the juice frozen asap before mould moves in. Such s high percentage of split fruit is unusual - are they perhaps over-ripe?

in very high temperatures the plant stops growing and water evaporates from the fruit as plant is dormant due to too high temperatures , when it cools the plant grows again the fruit fills with water acting like uneven watering, very hot days can cause this and give fruit splitting.

Starloc, thank you for the information. Is there any way of preventing this in future years?
