  • New plotter saying hello!

    Hi everyone

Just saying hi and introducing myself. I took ownership of my very first allotment on Friday 22nd July. I was so excited and keen to get it (we had some good weather forecast for that weekend) that I went to the council offices to get the key when I handed over the paperwork. I love, love, love it and have spent as much time as possible at my plot since. I'm lucky to have a lot of 'old school' allotment holders around me who are always happy to give advice and assistance but I want to be here too!

I'm in Sheffield and it's a sloping site, down to a small stream and the previous owner has put tiered beds in. He also built paths, compost bins, raised wooden beds and a fabulous irrigation system that runs right down the slope (half of which is still to be uncovered). I also have a front door and a shed. Sadly, though he was only young, he died a year or so ago. He was well liked and I'm kinda proud to be able to bring his very loved plot back to life (or have a good try!). Have been taking photos as I go along and even after a few weeks it's good to see a massive difference.

It's a big plot (301 sq m) and it's just li'l ole me so I'm learning patience as I go along. I'm just so happy when I'm there, it's a lovely, tranquil, sunny space with gorgeous far-reaching views and I feel very lucky to have it. I've never grown fruit and veg before (only had flower gardens) so lots to learn and lots of questions!

I was thinking of a blog too Cadalot as I also love writing. How do I go about starting one? I don't want to hijack any threads on here with my ramblings. :-)

Thanks to you all for the lovely warm welcomes. I find that fellow plotters/gardeners all have a seam of kindness running through them :-)
